Parliament passes facilitation of traffic for Segway PT

Today the Council of States approved law changes providing significant facilitation of traffic for the Segway PT. Electric small motorbikes up to 20 km/h shall be equated with motor-assisted bicycles or E-Bikes concerning traffic rules and requirements for the drivers.

The facilities see the following main changes:

• The electric vehicles are allowed to use bicycle circulation areas
• The vehicles can be driven by individuals over the age of 14 years holding a moped license or when older than 16 years without any license
• The periodic vehicle inspections are omitted

The Segway Personal Transporter (PT) remains classified as a small motorbike. Therefore there will be no changes made concerning the regulation and legal obligation to insure the vehicles. The amendments are currently drawn up by the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO).

The changes decided by the Traffic Commission of the Council of States in June 2012 were approved by the Federal Council last December and by the National Council in spring . After the six-month formal consultation the facilitation will become effective in 2014.

We have finally achieved our objective after campaigning for facilitation of traffic for almost five years. Urban or rural safe and appropriate traffic routes as well as bicycle parking facilities may now be used and young individuals are allowed to control the Segway PT!
